Diabetes Q & A

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease resulting from too-high blood glucose levels, commonly called high blood sugar levels. Your blood sugar supplies the bulk of your body’s energy. Your pancreas produces insulin to extract blood sugar from food and then transports it into cells to use for energy.

If you have diabetes, your pancreas isn’t making insulin (type 1 diabetes), or you’re making insulin but the insulin isn’t getting into your cells (type 2 diabetes). Type 2 diabetes is, by far, the most common. Type 1 diabetes accounts for just 5% of diabetes cases today. Both types of diabetes are serious and require treatment.

What are the symptoms of diabetes?

Diabetes symptoms can include:

  • Increased thirst
  • Increased hunger
  • More frequent urination
  • Blurry vision
  • Cuts or wounds that don’t heal
  • Itchy skin
  • Foot numbness
  • Foot pain

If you have pre-diabetes, or if you’re in the early stage of diabetes, you may not have obvious symptoms.

Is diabetes preventable?

Type 1 diabetes usually starts in childhood, and type 2 diabetes is typically diagnosed in adulthood. Type 1 diabetes isn’t preventable, but recognizing your risk factors and taking proactive steps now can prevent type 2 diabetes.

Am I at risk for diabetes?

The risk factors for type 2 diabetes are well-established, and this means that Dr. Medani can warn you and help you avoid type 2 diabetes in many cases. Controllable risk factors include:

  • Being overweight
  • Having high cholesterol
  • Having high blood pressure
  • Inactive lifestyle

The type 2 diabetes risk factors that you can’t control include:

  • History of diabetes in your family
  • African-American, Asian, Hispanic, Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander race
  • Age 45 or higher

You can minimize the controllable risk factors with Dr. Medani’s help. This may help you avoid diabetes even if you also have uncontrollable risk factors.

How is diabetes treated?

Diabetes treatment depends on whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, and also on what your symptoms are. If you have type 1 diabetes, you need either insulin shots or an insulin pump along with a healthy lifestyle.

If you have type 2 diabetes, you may only need to lose weight and live healthier to control your diabetes. If your blood sugar isn’t regulated with these measures, Dr. Medani can prescribe medication to help.
