The Link Between Obesity and Diabetes

Obesity means having an excessive amount of fat according to your body mass index (BMI), which measures your height and weight. If your BMI is 30 or higher, you’re obese. And obesity has many health risks associated with it, including the potential for diabetes.

Dr. Ignatius Medani, MD of Sound Internal and Aesthetic Medicine is a diabetes specialist who can help you with treatments for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. But if you have prediabetes due to your weight, there’s good news—you can actually prevent it from becoming full diabetes with weight loss and a change of diet and lifestyle.

The obesity and diabetes connection

Diabetes is a condition where your body does not produce insulin correctly, which leads to the sugar levels in your blood being too high. Diabetes can lead to heart disease, kidney failure, blindness, and even amputations. In the United States, diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death.

While type 1 diabetes is due primarily to genetics and family history, there are several factors that can cause type 2 diabetes, like age, inactivity, high blood pressure, and abnormal levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. But excessive weight and obesity may be the most important factor, because BMI is directly related to insulin resistance.

While type 1 diabetes is not preventable, you can prevent type 2 diabetes by being proactive with your lifestyle. This includes regular exercise, losing weight, eating healthy, and lowering your cholesterol and blood pressure.

Symptoms of diabetes

If you’re experiencing several of the following symptoms, come see Dr. Medani right away for a full examination and blood test. These include:

If you have diabetes, we’re here to help you treat and control it. For type 1, you’ll need insulin shots or an insulin pump. With type 2, losing weight and creating a new, healthier lifestyle may be enough to control it.

But if you’re unhealthy and obese, but not yet diabetic, let the team at Sound Internal and Aesthetic Medicine come up with a plan to make sure you don’t move into type 2 diabetes. Call us or book an appointment for our Federal Way, Washington office.
